On May 21st 1997 the Toronto Blue Jays had an otherwise non descript game against the New York Yankees before 19,853 at Yankee Stadium. Starting for the Blue Jays that night was their ace Roger Clemens who had 199 career wins going in. He was masterful that night as he gave up just four hits and struck out 12 over eight innings on the way to a 4-1 victory. It was was dominant in his two seasons with the Blue Jays, winning the pitching triple crown and the Cy Young Award in both seasons.
Clemens was overpowering throughout, and might have thrown his third complete game if his pitch count had not reached 126 through eight innings. Still, he struck out 10 or more for the 71st time in his storied career and lowered his ERA to 1.86. If former teammate Wade Boggs had not fought off an inside fastball for an opposite-field double in the first inning, Clemens might have carried a no-hit bid into the seventh.
He retired 14 consecutive batters in one stretch and seemed to get stronger in the middle innings. The Yankees finally broke through for a run in the eighth inning on a pair of hits and an RBI grounder by Boggs.
